“During World War II, King Christian X of Denmark did not thwart Nazi attempts to identify Jews by wearing a yellow star himself. Jews in Denmark were never forced to wear the Star of David. The Danes did help most Jews flee the country before the end of the war."
“Contrary to the common myth, the Coriolis effect does not determine the direction that water rotates in a bathtub drain or a flushing toilet. Generally speaking, the Coriolis effect is only significant at large scales, such as in weather systems or oceanic currents. In addition, most toilets inject water into the bowl at an angle, causing a spin too fast to be significantly affected by the Coriolis effect."

Of course. 81zi mentioned the issue and xw even did a test.

“Cattle (particularly bulls) are not enraged by the color red (something provocative is often said to be "like a red rag to a bull"). Cattle are red-green color-blind. It is not the color of the cape that angers the bull, but rather the movement of the fabric that irritates the bull and incites it to charge. The red color is used to mask the blood that comes from the bull during and at the end of the bull fight."

Just because the bull is red-green color blind doesn't mean it can't see the color of red. Two different concepts. In trying to clarify misconceptions another one is created?

It is not true that air takes the same time to travel above and below an aircraft's wing.[118] This misconception, illustrated at right, is widespread among textbooks and non-technical reference books, and even appears in pilot training materials. In fact the air moving over the top of an airfoil generating lift is always moving much faster than the equal transit theory would imply.[119]Further information: equal transit-time fallacy and lift (force)

“It is not[46] easier to balance an egg on its end on the first day of spring. In fact, the ease or difficulty of balancing an egg is the same 365 days a year. This myth is said to originate with the egg of Li Chun, an ancient Chinese folk belief that it is easier to balance an egg on Li Chun, the first day of spring in the Chinese lunar calendar. In Chinese Li means setup/erect, Chun spring/egg. Setup spring is a Chinese solar term, literally interpreted as erecting an egg for fun. It was introduced to the western world in a Life article in 1945, and popularized once again by self-titled "urban shaman" Donna Henes, who has hosted an annual egg-balancing ceremony in New York City since the mid-1970s.[47][48][49]” - Re: List of Common Misconceptionsposted on 09/28/2010

- Re: List of Common Misconceptionsposted on 10/05/2010
- Re: List of Common Misconceptionsposted on 10/06/2010
- Re: List of Common Misconceptionsposted on 10/06/2010

r_i=int S_i(f) L(f) df, (i=1,...,n)

Give you some color to see see.
-speaking from my personal experience, I can see the individual colors okay but occasionally may have difficulty reading certain color font over some other certain color background. (can still make out what's written, just not as easy/fast as black on white; of course the assumption is if the person makes the presentation that way he/she can see it effortlessly).
I wonder what a completely color bind person's world is like. I heard from one of my college professor years ago that he had a student who was completely color bind but was his best student at acid/base titration-because he can appreciate the different shades.
Never paid attention to the relative position of the green light vs red. Is the green inferior and medial? :0

- posted on 10/08/2010

Humans and closely related primates normally have three types of cone cells and are therefore trichromats(animals with three different cones). However, at low light intensities the rod cells may contribute to color vision, giving a small region of tetrachromacy in the color space. - Re: RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: Re: List of Common Misconceptionsposted on 10/09/2010

- Re: RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: Re: List of Common Misconceptionsposted on 10/09/2010

The evolution of fruit color in freshly-fruited plants",有很多hypotheses但无定论:http://www.jstor.org/stable/2462168 ,文章是90年的,之后肯定还有新的研究但多半会引这篇。
人也有可能是tetrachromatic(除了gz说的在twilight zone时rod cell的加入的情况),至少理论上,这个很好玩儿,但说起来麻烦一点。 Yet another example that women are more perceptive than men.

- posted on 10/15/2010
- posted on 10/15/2010

- Re: RE: Re: List of Common Misconceptionsposted on 10/16/2010

Their analysis showed that, in a culture with only two terms, the two terms would mean roughly 'dark' (covering black, dark colors and cold colors such as blue) and 'bright' (covering white, light colors and warm colors such as red). All languages with three colors terms would add red to this distinction, thus for these languages making three basic color terms. Thus, the three most basic colors are black, white, and red. Additional color terms are added in a fixed order as a language evolves: first green and/or yellow (first one, and then the other); then blue.
