Fieldstone’s impression
With the arrangement of College of Mount ST Vincent and Rockland Teacher Center,I am very lucky to have a chance of visiting Fieldstone Secondary School in Rockland County. Fieldstone ,near to Hudson River ,an hour journey from NYC,is located in a small valley. There are no resident areas nearby,so the campus has fresh air and best sceneries. The green lawn and azure sky welcome me first, Fieldstone makes me imagine Thoreau’s Walden. Fieldstone’s best conditions form an extreme contrast with those schools in Manhattan, the whole campus looks like a garden and is fit for studies.According to on-line investigation, parents have given the school an average rating of 4 out of 5 stars. The parking place is full of cars because most students and staff go to school by cars.
Principal Frank Parrino warmly introduced me to Mr Roman Rodriquez,a world history teacher.During the next 2 hours,I shared Mr Roman’s two classes. As the other schools in NYC,all Fieldstone’s classes have not more over 30 students. Mr Roman’s first class just had only 12 students, the second just a little more than 20.The students come from all over the world, including Africans,Hispanic,Uropeans, etc. The class looks like a small UN.The class size is proper enough for Mr Roman to manage.By contrast, our china city schools’ classrooms are crowded very much, and each class has more than 50 students ,double size of American one. This is the most important difference between the two countries’ elementary education.
Because of the end of the term, Mr Roman’s 2 classes were both for review and he had to go over all the knowledge they had learned before. Mr Roman often asked the questions ,the students replied very actively.World history class embraces a variety of cultural affairs, including prehistorical era,Egyptian pyramid,Indian’s Hinduism and Buhdaism, etc. Some students shew no interest in history, but most liked to put up their hands to answer Mr Roman’s questions. The classes were all in good order, and Mr Roman also encouraged his students to clarify their viewpoints. The students can keep regulations in classes,I think this is just the civilization which cannot be touched but visible.
Fieldstone’s students had shown great enthusiasm on China problems. Mr Roman left a few minites for students to question me.When I told them I came from Shenzhen,no one knew about my city. When I talked about my city’s 14 million population, the students were astonished. When I told them I had to fly over 16 hours to US,the guys expressed surprise. The students asked me what they wanted to know, such as the courses, the homework, the sports, and so on.i felt very deeply that the people of the two countries should understand each other more broadly. No understandings maybe bring more misunderstandings.
American schools’textbooks can be in recycle use, that means the newcomers can make full use of the used textbooks by the upper grade. The world history textbook in Mr Roman’s classroom is as heavy as a thick dictionary,if such book is put in the schoolbag,I am afraid the students cannot burden it. I took an outline look on the contents, most of them are the same as we use in China.European part is heavily emphasized because American civilization dates back to even ancient Greece. China has a very small portion in the book but attracts me most.Beyond my imagination,Sino-japanese war were discribed in one paragraph, the rape of Nanking was written.Because of different perspectives,American textbooks took a contrary stand on some events, such as modern revolution and democratic movement in contemprary China. I hope someday, with deepening mutual understanding ,the two countries can reach an agreement on those problems. That still needs more education.
If I talk about the most impression Fieldstone had given me,I think it is their sincerity. When I first reached school, the principal led me walk around the campus, then Mr Roman guided me every place where can be visited before his class began. Mr Roman is just over his thirties,a very kind ,friendly person. He always spoke slowly so that I could grasp him well.He answered all my questions about his beautiful school.Every teacher on the campus said hello to me when we met.During the class,I went outside to look for restroom,a unknown teacher brought me a long walk, but the door is locked, then he went back to get the key for me,I was so moved. The kindness and sincerity of the school made me enforgettable,I think this kind of behavior itself is education. If a teacher behaves well, the students will behave well.If we say Americans’social civilization looks higher than other countries,it must owe a great deal to schools’ moral education as Fieldstone is practicing.
I left Fieldstone after 3 o’clock, Fieldstone grew up in my brain.

Fieldstone’s impression
Through an arrangement made by College of Mount ST Vincent and Rockland Teacher Center, I was very lucky to have had the chance to visit Fieldstone Secondary School, in Rockland County. Fieldstone, near the Hudson River, and an hour's journey from NYC, is located in a small valley. As there are no residential areas nearby, the campus enjoys fresh air and beautiful scenery. With the green lawn and azure sky greeting me, Fieldstone reminds me of Thoreau's Walden. Fieldstone's natural settings form a striking contrast to those schools in Manhatten. The entire campus resembles a garden, and is fit for school-life. The parking place is constantly filled with cars, as most students and staff drive to school. According to an online investigation, parents have given the school an average rating of 4 out of 5 stars.
Principal Frank Parrino introduced me warmly to Mr Roman Rodriquez, a world history teacher, and, for the next two hours, I participated in Mr Roman's classes. Like all the other schools in NYC, Fieldstone's classes have under 30 students per class. Mr Roman’s first class had only 12 students, and the second had just over 20. The students come from all over the world, including countries such as Africa, Latin America, Europe. The class looks like a very small UN. The class sizes are manageable by Mr Roman Rodriquez. By contrast, classrooms in our Chinese cities are very crowded, easily consisting of over 50 students in each class, doubling that of our American counterpart. This is the most significant difference between the two countries’ elementary and secondary education systems.
Because it was nearly the end of the term, Mr Roman's classes were reviewing what they had learnt in class previously that semester. The students participated actively, as Mr Roman asked questions. World History embraces a variety of cultural topics, including the prehistorical era, Egyption pyramids, Indian's Hinduism and Buhdaism. A few students showed little interest in history, however the majority were willing to participate in class discussion. Students from the two classes behaved in an orderly manner, keeping to the set regulations, and Mr Roman encouraged them to ask questions to clarify their views.
The Fieldstone students show great interest in China's issues. Mr Roman, their teacher, left the room for a few minutes, in order to allow the students to question me. When I told them that I come from the city of ShenZhen, nobody knew about my city. When I spoke about the city's population of 14 million, and that I had to fly for 16 hours to arrive at the US, the students were shocked. The students asked me about things they wanted to know - for example, the courses, homework, sports, and so on. In answering their queries, I felt deeply that the two countries ought to know each other better, as a lack of understanding may bring misunderstandings.
American textbooks can be reused year after year - they can be sold and bought second hand, year after year. The World History text book is thick and heavy, like a dictionary, and it's a wonder that students are able to carry it to and from school every day. I skimmed its contents briefly, and most of it is similar to what we use in China. The European topics are emphasized upon, as America's History can be traced back to Ancient Greece. The history of China only makes up a small section of the book, but it fascinates me the most. The Sino-Japanese war was described in the textbook, as well as the Massacre of Nanjing. However, as the text book is written in a different perspective to our (China's) own, they looked at some events in different ways, such as for the modern revolution, and the democratic movement in contemporary China. I hope someday, with a deepened mutual understanding, the two countries may reach an agreement on such issues.
If asked about the deepest impression Fieldstone has left upon me, I would have to say that it is the sincerity and warmth of students and staff. When I first arrived at the school, the principal himself showed me around the campus, and afterwards, Mr Roman gave me a tour before his class started. Mr Roman is in his early thirties, and is an extremely kind and friendly person. He made sure to speak slowly, so that I could grasp his meaning with my limited skills in the English language. He also patiently answered all my questions about his beautiful school, and every teacher on campus greeted me upon meeting. In fact, when I went outside to look for a restroom, a mystery teacher was willing to show me the way, although it was a fairly long walk. When we reached the restroom, the door was locked, but the teacher kindly went back to retrieve a key for me. I was very moved by this simple act of kindness, and it is this kindness and sincerity that made the school so unforgettable. I think this kind of behaviour in itself can be considered an education. The teachers act as role models for the students. If it can be said that America's seems socially more civilized than other countries, then a great deal of it must be a result of the moral education received in schools such as Fieldstone.
After leaving the school at 3 o'clock, Fieldstone had already left a deep and lasting impression upon me.
