Just finished lecture 23 and 24. What a nerdy and nutty thing to read!
In lecture 23, the professor examined the importance of the quality and quantity of life, then he argues that to the extreme, the “peak” of the quality is all that matters: “Once I
lived like the gods, and more is not needed.” This is exactly in line with Confucius' thoughts, and I am ok with it.
But then he continues to ponder what exactly is the “peak” of the quality of life. He seems to consider the “peak” is to achieve “semi-immortality” by having “accomplishments that will continue to last after you”. In short, you need to leave a legacy for your life to be worthwhile.
Now I am skeptical of that. Legacies are all good and dandy but --- imagine we are toward the end of the world. Let us say, on your 85th birthday, the world would end. (for the simplicity of it, let us say it would be painless and uneventful. The world would simply disappear within millisecond.) Now, since there is no legacy that can be left, does it mean that your life by default is less worthwhile than the lives of those who lived in the ancient years?

BDSM:) - posted on 09/25/2008

It would be a friendly goodbye, not a hostile abandonment.

Similar to high school or college policy debate, each year there is a chosen topic to be debated on for a whole year, but underneath theory and base material will not change that much. Of cause there are new evidences and kids will explore more creative ways or thoughts to polish their strategies.
Colleges are setting up new courses to teach fundamental theories. Here is another one:
