VOTE:NO。 - Re: PROP 200 选举抽奖法posted on 10/31/2006
VOTE:NO! - Re: PROP 200 选举抽奖法posted on 10/31/2006
Propositions on ballot are usually nothing more than a bait to motivate voters of certain political persuasions. They are not laws even if passed. The legislators then would use the vote as a mandate by the voters in political maneuvers.
You remember that people of Ohio gave the presidency to Bush in 2004? Most analysts seem to attribute Bush's winning in Ohio to the fact that the Republicans managed to put a proposition to ban same sex marriage on the Ohio ballot.

Hi 81, could you or other people tell me how the propositions work? How can they become law? They have to be enforced in some way if passed? I cannot imagine that they are good for nothing...

I guess once the propositions be voted for they'll become law.
By the way, 80% of a human brain is water. It's a scientific fact. It's good you're not eligible to vote. - Re: PROP 200 选举抽奖法posted on 10/31/2006
Do not quote me as law expert, but I think most propositions are something like referendums. Once passed, they give politicians mandates to further act through legislation to make corresponding laws.
Even though those referendums are not laws themselves, they are powerful mandates that force law makers to act accordingly.
I think anyone can put a proposition on a ballot - as long as you collect a sufficient number of signatures.
- Re: PROP 200 选举抽奖法posted on 10/31/2006
If 80% is what we were born with, I have to argue it's probably further ascending at the moment, given the fact that all we entertain each other here on internet is to pour more water into brains.

- Re: PROP 200 选举抽奖法posted on 10/31/2006

Unmarried women targeted in election
By Deborah Charles
Wed Nov 1, 8:54 AM ET
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - For one Hollywood actress, the first time was in a garage. Another did it when she was 18. A third researched all the positions before doing it.
And they're not talking about sex. Angie Harmon, Felicity Huffman and Regina King are starring in a political ad, recalling the first time they voted.
The public-service ad is part of an effort to motivate more women, particularly "women on their own" -- single, divorced and widowed -- to go to the polls on November 7.
"They are the fastest growing demographic group in this country," said Page Gardner, president of Women's Voices Women Vote, the group that produced the ad.
"In 2004 they were 22 percent of the electorate yet there were still 20 million unmarried women who did not vote," she said. "If they voted in higher numbers ... they could literally help determine the agenda in this country."
Unmarried women tend to lean Democratic, political experts said.
Gardner said her group was nonpartisan and its goal was just to convince unmarried women -- who pollsters describe as a group that often feels "left behind" and uninformed -- that they have the power to make an impact in the vote.
Political scientists and pollsters said the unmarried bloc of women voters represents one of the key unknowns in the election. Women represent 52 percent of all U.S. voters.

Susan and WOAposted on 11/02/2006

I think the same sex marriage ban you are referring to must be proposed as "amendment to the state constitution", just like in my state Arizona.
In Arizona it was voted "No" with only 51% of vote, that was close! That shows our necks are not too red. :-)

You must be right. I'm surprised by people of Arizona. I would have voted no myself had I had enough time to get to the polling station. Marriage with opposite sex is in turmoil, why bother marrying same sex fella. :) - Re: PROP 200 选举抽奖法posted on 11/08/2006

I think you mean you are saying "No" to the same sex marriage, while the ballot result is saying "No" to the Ban of the same sex marriage.
Here is what I think: since marriage is so yesterday, and we heterosexuals don't even like it anymore, why not letting gays to give it a try? ;-)
This voting result didn't change the status quo: in Arizona, like in all states except Massachusetts, the same sex marriage is still "void and prohibited". It is simply not writing in the state constitution.

Darn it, I am voting No to that proposition! This proposition sounds just so sweet and innocent, no wonder it gets passed, but its real purpose is to put our 边缘人 on spot!
Oh well, I guess it is ok, it is not like I can read Spanish anyway...
Immigrants, especially illegal ones, are facing a big defeat in my state. Multiple propositions target immigrants and they all get passed. Even if they are not, I think Asians are caught in the middle, not being able to benefit from either side.
